State Fair....Then and Now

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Going back to the state fair always brings back memories. Going now as a spectator and not an exhibitor still seems strange and its been more than 10 years since I've stepped into the showring.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been keeping up with The Kids Cattle Blog as they hit the show circuit this summer. It still looks like so much fun.....then I remember how much work it is too. But its worth it.....especially when you get to bring the "hardware" home.

We had our share of Champions and Reserves at the county fairs, but nothing compares to winning the state fair. I'm lucky enough to have won, twice. And the prize - a silver punch bowl platter complete with cups and ladle.

(sorry for the photo quality, I made do with what I had)

How far we have come......this year, we judged 4-H exhibits. It was a lot of fun. Both Ron and I enjoyed spending time talking to each of the kids about their crops and entomology projects. We can't wait to do it again.

Someday, I'm sure we'll be heading to the fair, with cattle in tow, but until then we'll have to spend out time checking out the Lumberjack Show and other attractions.
