Last week when the weather was warm, we tried out the new wagon. Lots of fun for everyone. We definitely have a little girl who loves the outdoors. When we tell her its time to go bye-bye and get her coat, she's ready to roll!
Good news...the temperatures are supposed to go back up at the end of this week, so we'll be able to spend a little more time outside!

No need to ask Madison to say cheese....it doesn't always work. But if you want a nice big smile, just tell her to show her teeth. Here's a self portrait we took this last weekend. She wanted to share her extra pair of sunglasses with me.

It's a crappy, overcast day here. Hopefully we'll be able to use those shades later this week

While visiting the Farmer's Wife this morning, I not only learned a new word - afoul - but I also learned about a band that was here in CU not that long ago.
Now that isn't earth-shattering news. This is a fairly large city, a university town, with lots of places to catch some entertainment. What cracked me up was that one of the band members almost got arrested.....for jaywalking! I can't count the number of times I've jaywalked in this town (if you're an officer of the law please don't arrest me). I guess I'll have to be a little more careful from now on!
You should definitely head over to the Farmer's Wife latest entry to hear more about it, but the good stuff is on the band's website with a you tube reenactment.

This weekend we met up with these yahoos in St. Louis. Corey and Eric are college buddies of Ron. While Eric only lives about two hours away, Corey & Ashley live in Kentucky, and unfortunately, we all don't get together very often.

It was a great weekend and we had a lot of fun. We heard countless Carbondale/Saluki stories. Let's just be glad I met Ron after his time at southern. I definitely wouldn't have been able to keep up with the three of them.

Between stories we spent time supporting the local economy -- if you know what I mean. But, we did check out a few things - we headed out to a boat show Saturday morning and did the Anheuser Busch tour (which was pretty cool) in the afternoon. We spent a little time at Union Station, but not nearly enough for me. I definitely want to go back and see more.
Saturday night met up with Ron's cousin Mandi (also a southern grad) and her husband Matt. Can you believe 7 grown adults spent 3 hours at Dave and Buster's? Better yet, can you believe I failed to get a group shot from the weekend? Pure failure on my part. My number one mission the next time we all get together.
What a great, great weekend! It's a good thing I had Sunday afternoon to catch up on some much needed rest like this guy.

Audreys are receptive, good-natured, and supportive. They seek union with others and the world around them.
How to Get Along with Me
* * If you want me to do something, how you ask is important. I especially don't like expectations or pressure
* * I like to listen and to be of service, but don't take advantage of this
* * Listen until I finish speaking, even though I meander a bit
* * Give me time to finish things and make decisions. It's OK to nudge me gently and nonjudgmentally
* * Ask me questions to help me get clear
* * Tell me when you like how I look. I'm not averse to flattery
* * Hug me, show physical affection. It opens me up to my feelings
* * I like a good discussion but not a confrontation
* * Let me know you like what I've done or said
* * Laugh with me and share in my enjoyment of life
What I Like About Being an Audrey
* * being nonjudgmental and accepting
* * caring for and being concerned about others
* * being able to relax and have a good time
* * knowing that most people enjoy my company; I'm easy to be around
* * my ability to see many different sides of an issue and to be a good mediator and facilitator
* * my heightened awareness of sensations, aesthetics, and the here and now
* * being able to go with the flow and feel one with the universe
What's Hard About Being an Audrey
* * being judged and misunderstood for being placid and/or indecisive
* * being critical of myself for lacking initiati * ve and discipline
* * being too sensitive to criticism; taking every raised eyebrow and twitch of the mouth personally
* * being confused about what I really want
* * caring too much about what others will think of me
* * not being listened to or taken seriously
Audreys as Children Often
* * feel ignored and that their wants, opinions, and feelings are unimportant
* * tune out a lot, especially when others argue
* * are "good" children: deny anger or keep it to themselves
Audreys as Parents
* * are supportive, kind, and warm
* * are sometimes overly permissive or nondirective

1500 acres down...about 1000 more to go. Some comic relief is definitely needed since it continues to rain :(
Here's the 411: Madison loves to play on the swingset at Grandma's. Fluffy (the cat) loves Madison - where ever she is, he is. Now Madison continues to amaze us each time we see her. She's learned to climb up the ladder to the slide and slide down all by herself (under grandma or papa's watchful eye). It seems that the cat has also taken a fancy to playing on the slide. They race up the ladder, Maddy slides down, and then Fluffy slides down. I didn't really believe it until I saw with my own eyes.
Not the greatest videos...but I can't not share them (how's that for a double negative). The whole event was captured on three short video clips and unfortunately the last is sideways - hopefully we can catch it on one good video sometime soon. I'd recommend turning the volume off; it was a very windy day and there is a lot of noise.

I was reading Raising Country Kids this morning and it made smile.
While technically not a farm wife, I grew up on farm, still go home to the farm, and can definitely relate to these....and doesn't it make you realize that moms are super moms?

You Know You're A Farm Wife If . . .
You call the implement dealer and he recognizes your voice.
The vet's number is on the speed dial of your phone.
Your second vehicle is still a pickup.
Your husband has ever used field equipment to maintain your lawn.
A night out involves the local 4-H club.
You've ever washed the kids or the dishes with a pressure washer.
Picking rock is considered a chance to get out of the house.
Taking lunch to the field is as close as you get to a picnic.
You can mend a pair of pants and the fence that ripped them.
The shopping list in your purse includes the sizes of filters, tires, overalls, chains, belts, lights, cables, spark plugs or shotgun shells.
The directions to your house include the words miles, silos, last, or gravel road.
Lacey or Frilly is a farm animal, but not your nightgown.
Your farm equipment has the latest global positioning technology and you still can't find your husband.
Quality time with your hubby means you'll have a flashlight in one hand and a wrench in the other.
Sharing a cab has nothing to do with a taxi and everything to do with getting across the field.
No one leaves your house without eating something.
You're equally adept at helping with your children's math homework or the complicated spreadsheets that detail every item bought, sold or misplaced on the farm for the past 10 years.
You can deliver a calf, drive a combine, cook dinner for a half-dozen hired hands, and still make time to pick the kids up from soccer practice.
You're equally at home at a PTA meeting or in session with a commodity association committee.
Your name is taped to the side of all your cakepans.
The "fresh ingredients" your recipe calls for reminds you to do the chores.
You have lots of machinery and each piece is worth more than your house.
Grass stains are the least of your laundry problems.
Your refrigerator contains LA-200.
Your wedding was planned for the end of November so as not to interfere with calving, lambing, seeding, summerfallowing, haying, harvest, or hunting season.
You automatically fall silent when the weather comes on.
You buy toilet paper 128 rolls at a time.
You can make a meal that can be ready in six minutes and will still be ready in two hours.
Your job in town is considered a farm subsidy.
Your son beat up another kid on the school bus arguing over the color of tractors.
You laughed at every one of the items on this list.

Picture this: grown adults on a Saturday night hanging out, having fun, enjoying each other's company. It's great to have such awesome friends. And now I have reasons to love them even more.
We've entered a new era in our lives: Rock Band - the video game. That's right, those adults spent Saturday night playing rock band. And I'm sure the others are really happy that the photos that were taken are on Dawn's camera and not mine.....no public embarrassment. Anyway, I'm getting off the subject. Ron and I have not been privy to this game before. The others.....let's say they've been practicing. And they're competitive. SO DON'T SCREW UP!!!! Because when you screw up...you lose your video game fans. That's right, you're playing gigs and earning fans...and probably other stuff too, I just don't know what that is. I was laughing so hard I was crying. I did take a shot at bass guitar though. And it was fun. I can't wait until the next time we can hang out, and throw up our rock fists!
Ron and I have been thinking though, we think the country version is definitely more our style and what would be better than getting to play the video game electric fiddle???

This weekend we had the Venable family reunion. It was a fun-filled Saturday with family, fun, and some Illini football. While we missed out on tailgating and the game, we were able to catch up with family, many of whom we hadn't seen since our wedding.
There was lots of great food, and we ate until until our stomachs were about to explode. We played games -- bags, washers, hillbilly golf, and volleyball. Now, I guess volleyball is a tradition in the family. Several hours of the afternoon were spent diving for and hitting balls over the net. I'm sure many hours are now being spent soaking aching muscles :)

Last Friday we headed to Chicago for a fun-filled weekend with friends. And oh what a weekend it was. It doesn't get any better than spending time with your best friends. Throw in the husbands and 3 kids and our multi-family vacation was quite different than the road trips of years past.
Friday night we headed to Medieval Times in Schaumburg. We didn't know a whole lot going into this outing except it would be a dinner and show - with jousting and all. Oh...and that we were going to have to eat our meal without silverware because as we were told, they did not use silverware in medieval times.
It was a very interesting evening. Both the food and show were pretty good. The show was based around a tournament with different sections of the arena cheering for their very own knight. How do you know what knight to root for you might ask? Well, they give you crowns that you are supposed to wear as you enter the building. You'll be able to tell, we were rooting for the black and white knight. As you watch the tournament, several courses of food are brought out to you and they even have a break in the show with Andalusian horses to that were amazing to watch.

My mom and dad, along with Stacy and Madison came to town last weekend for Stephanie and Chris's wedding. They rolled into Champaign Friday evening....let the fun begin!
We stopped at Papa Del's, picked up some pizza, and headed to the hotel for supper. We hadn't had Papa Del's in a really long time.....it was pretty darn good! After stuffing ourselves silly and catching up, Ron and I took Stacy and Maddy to Hessel Park. After a long car ride, we figured Maddy would be ready to run. Oh, how we were mistaken. Before I tell you about our little trip, let me preface it by telling you that Maddy loves to be outside and swinging is one of her favorite things. Hessel Park is a pretty popular place to take kids to play and Friday evening was no exception. I think she may have been a little intimidated. All she did was stare at all the people. We'd walk around to different areas...and she'd stare. We'd swing, and she'd just stare. Checked out the slide...she stared. All in all, it was pretty funny. I think my sister needs to get her out in public more :)

After our experience at the park, we headed across the street to the Custard Cup for some ice cream. And every little baseball fan needs her ice cream in a plastic helmet, don't you think?

We took the family out to the Apple Dumpling for breakfast. Once again, yummy! It was a great way to start the day before we headed out for a morning of shopping.

We squeezed in some stores before heading home and getting changed for the wedding. It was beautiful wedding and fun reception. I'm sure the Grussing's are having a great time in Mexico right now!
Before calling it quits for the night, we headed back to the hotel for a quick swim. Well, not everyone, just Maddy and Papa. It was her first time in a big pool.
Hard to believe the weekend was half over, but on Sunday we all had breakfast before the family headed north again. Ron and I checked out the county fair and had some greasy fair food before I played softball Sunday night.
Time flies when you're having fun!

A little game from Jen:
A) Four places I go to over and over: work, softball, church, grocery store
B) Four people that email me regularly: Stephanie, Sondra, Dawn, Mom
C) Four favorite places to eat: Chevy's, Red Lobster, Biaggi's, Cheddars
D) Four places I would rather be right now: at the farm in Morrison, the mountains in Tennessee, at the beach in Mexico, sleeping in :)
F) Four TV shows I watch all the time: hmmm...not a lot of tv watching at our house lately, but I like CSI, Nashville Star, Friends, and Braves baseball
Here's what you are supposed to do... and please don't spoil the fun...

Today was the annual Independence Day potluck at church. It was also the first Sunday for our new pastor. As always, there was lots of food (those Methodists love to cook). Pastor Megan came on a great Sunday, besides lots of food, there were games and activities for the kids. Volleyball, three-legged race, tug-of-war, pinatas, and a bounce house. We left before the water balloons and limbo game came out, but check out the photos. We don't have a lot of kids at Shiloh, but the ones there today had a blast...and so did many of the adults that came outside to play with us.

Heading off to the "field" for work isn't too bad. In fact, we get to check out a lot of fun and cool places around the state. Not to mention beautiful places too. In fact, we can often time our day trips so we can stop for lunch and enjoy the scenery.
After trudging through some firewood dealers, industrial parks, and pallet recyclers, its always nice to be able to have traps at or near a park. For instance...Kickapoo State Park near Danville.

There's lots of pretty places to sit and enjoy the view and also cast your fishing line.........maybe we'll have to bring the fishing poles along one of these days.
Yesterday, we spent time in southeastern Illinois. Olney, to be more precise. Do you know what Olney's claim to fame is? WHITE SQUIRRELS....yep, you heard me right, white squirrels. Unfortunately, we didn't see any white squirrels yesterday, but I did share one of my potato chips with this little guy.

We spent today on the road as well. Nothing too exciting, but I have to share this photo with you. I'm probably the only one who gets a laugh from this (maybe AJ too), but have you ever seen anyone fishing from a boat onshore?

I know I previously said I wasn't posting anything until later today, but during lunch I was catching up on my blog reading. One of my favorites Baking Delights had a fun post - What kind of cake are you?
It says I'm lemon cake..........what???? Strong, sexy, and overpowering? And I don't even eat lemon cake. Give it a try and let me know what you are.
You Are a Lemon Cake |
